The plant stanols in Benecol® foods work by partially preventing the absorption of cholesterol (both cholesterol produced by the body and dietary cholesterol). This means that the plant stanols in Benecol® foods are most effective when eaten with a main meal, as they can then act against cholesterol from both sources. Which meal you choose to enjoy Benecol® foods with is entirely up to you.

Benecol® foods can achieve significant cholesterol reduction once they have been consumed as recommended for two to three weeks. The reduction can only be maintained by continuing to eat Benecol® foods as recommended, and as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Should you remove Benecol® foods from your diet, your cholesterol will begin to return to its original level.
